Makers end season with 4-2 road win over Pioneers

 Portage Lake took a 1-0 lead over Mosinee going into the first intermission of the final regular season game. The Pioneers quickly jumped on the scoreboard  in the starting minutes of the second period, increasing their margin by 2-0. 

Mosinee's defenseman, Travis Michalski brought them within one as team-mates Greg Hanson and Theran Bauer worked the puck around for the score. Portage Lake held a slight 2-1 advantage going into the final twenty minutes of play. Jordan Schmidt knotted the score midway through the period with Nick Zebro and Eric Vehlow assiting on the goal. Zebro later buried the puck to give Mosinee their first lead of the night with less than three minutes left in regulation. 

The Pioneers pulled their goalie to give them an extra man in their offensive zone. The Makers gained control of the puck with Vehlow passing the rubber to Zebro who found the empty and sealed the win for Mosinee.

Goalie Jake Michalski had 26 stops for a .929 save percentage. He finished the season ranked second in the Great Lakes Hockey League with a .898 overall save ratio, recording 9 Wins, 1 Loss and 1 Shut Out and a GAA of 2.90.
The Great Lakes Hockey League Tournament is being held at Capital Ice Arena in Middleton, WI  March 30-31 and April 1st. Mosinee takes to the ice Friday, March 30th @ 3:30 p.m. when they face off against Portage Lake, MI. A win would set the Makers up for a 6:00 p.m. game on Saturday and a loss would put them at 1:00 p.m.

Makers Record Back To Back Wins Over Weekend

Mosinee defeated their opponents over the weekend by out-shooting them 99-62 and out-scoring them 21-5. The Bombers of West Bend were throttled, 14-2 by the Makers in Mosinee's barn. They also handed the Wolverines a 7-3 loss in Calumet, MI.

Scoring for Mosinee in Game 1 were: Nick Zebro with a Hat Trick (3 Goals), Theran Bauer, Travis Michalski, Greg Hanson, Kevin Radke, Nick Bush, Keith Kuklinski, Brian Bednarczyk, Tom Lentz, Jordan Schmidt, Colin Blair and Willie Beetham each with one. Brad Rieck and Alex Nowak shared duties between the pipes and came up with 30 saves.

Game two lamp lighters were: Bednarczyk with a Hat Trick, Zebro with two (one which was short handed), Bauer and Beetham with one a piece. Jake Michalski served as goal tender for the night and recorded 27 saves.
Nick Zebro earned "Player of the Year" award by his teammates. Kevin Krueger and Curt Sattler were named "Fans of the Year" A special "Thank You" goes out to all the fans who supported the team this season. None of this would be possible without you and the team is looking forward to seeing everyone again next season.

The team wraps up their season March 23rd  when they travel to Houghton, MI to face off against the Portage Lake Pioneers. League tournament will be held in Madison March 30-31 and April 1. Game times to be determined after completion of the season which ends March 24th.


Makers Nail Down a Pair of Wins

 Mosinee Papermakers defeated the Green Bay Deacons 7-2 and the Calumet Wolverines 5-2 over the weekend. Brad Rieck and Jake Michalski each tallied a win, recording .933 and .931 save percentages between the posts.

Fridays game against the Deacons started out fast and highly physical. Mosinee held a 3-1 lead after one period. Putting up goals for the Makers were, Brian Bednarczyk (PP), Keith Kuklinski (EV) and Tom Lentz (EV).
Playing with a short bench, it was inevitable Green Bay would not be able to keep that pace. They gave up 4 additional goals to Mosinee in the second period, while finding the net on one occasion themselves. Colin Blair, Willie Beetham, Nick Zebro and Lentz gave the Makers a commanding 7-2 lead at the end of two periods. All goals were even strength. The third period's pace slowed considerably as Green Bay was running out of gas. Neither team scored and the game ended with Mosinee the 7-2 victor. 
Saturday, The Makers faced off against the Wolverines of Calumet, MI. It was "Stuffed Animal Toss" night. When Mosinee scored the first goal, fans threw the Stuffed Animals onto the ice.  Mosinee EMS, Aspirus Medi-Vac and Spirit collected 74 donations which were distributed to local hospitals and our Mosinee EMS department to help comfort ill and injured children  A special thank you goes out to all who participated.
First period action sent the teams to the locker room tied 1-1 at the intermission. Calumet pulled ahead 2-1 early on in the second period. That would be the last time the Wolverines held a lead. Mosinee ran off 4 unanswered goals to finish out the game with a 5-2 win. Scoring for the Makers were, Jordan Schmidt with a Hat-Trick (3 goals), Blair and Zebro with one a piece. Mosinee out-shot their opponents 108-59 throughout the two games.
The Makers return to action Friday, March 16th for their final home game of the season. The team will celebrate "Fan Appreciation" night. Anyone wearing purple to the game will receive $1 off admission. Join the team after the game for a Chili Dump at "Lucky's Pit Stop"  bar in Mosinee. The puck drops at 8:00 p.m.
